Andrew Norman’s large-scale orchestral work Play was commissioned by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and released on the BMOP/Sound label in December 2014 with Gil Rose conducting the BMOP. The piece was also conducted by Marin Alsop in August 2014 at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Santa Cruz. In the work, Norman muses on the many meanings of ‘play’, whether a child’s whimsical play or in the sense of manipulation or control: instruments sometimes cause other orchestral sections to behave in a certain way, resulting in a fascinating, unpredictable and frenetic journey.
